A spell checker that reads the whole text, not one word at a time. Paste an email, a cover letter, an essay, a listing or a message and get back a corrected copy: typos fixed, misspelled words fixed, and grammar and punctuation cleaned up along the way. Your wording, meaning and tone stay the same.
Word-by-word checkers miss the mistakes that make a text look careless: a correctly spelled word in the wrong place. Their and there, your and you're, its and it's, affect and effect, a missing letter that happens to form another real word. Because this checker reads full sentences, it catches most of those along with plain typos and the capital letters you forgot at the start of a sentence or in a name.
Normally it keeps the spelling variant you already use. If you write color, it stays color; if you write colour, it stays colour. Mixed texts can come back in either, so if consistency matters for a school or a publisher, give it one last look.
It isn't only for English. Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian and many other languages work, and each text is checked in the language it was written in, never translated. That's handy if you write emails in English at work and messages in another language at home.
You get a clean copy rather than a page full of red underlines, so it's quick to use: paste, check, copy. If you want to see what changed, keep your original open next to it. You can check up to 50,000 characters at once, about 20 pages; an email takes a few seconds. The text is checked on our server and isn't stored there; the corrected copy is saved in your library, only in this browser.
This page and the grammar checker run the same tool. The grammar checker page answers more about style and sentences; this one is about spelling. If you want to go beyond fixing mistakes, the paraphrasing tool can make a text shorter, simpler or more formal.
