Questions about passport photos

Is this passport photo maker free?

Yes, free with no sign-up, and the photo has no watermark. You only pay for printing, if you print it.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. The face crop and the background are done in your browser, and the photo stays on your device.

Which passport photo sizes are there?

22 documents from 17 countries plus the Schengen visa, including the US passport and visa at 2x2 inches, the UK passport at 35x45 mm with a light gray background, Canada, Australia and India. The size is picked for your country, and you can change it.

Will my passport photo be accepted?

We can't promise that. The photo is checked for head size where an official norm exists, a plain background, a centered face, eye height and a straight head, but offices also look at light, expression and glasses. Check your country's rules before you apply.

How long does it take?

About 20 seconds on a computer without a graphics card. The first time, the browser also downloads the model that finds the face and removes the background.

Can I print my passport photo at home or at a store?

Yes. Download a single photo for online forms or a 10x15 cm sheet, the standard 4x6 print, with several copies at 300 dpi, and print it at a photo counter.

Can I take the photo with my phone?

Yes. Ask someone to take it at eye level against a light plain wall, in even light, and drop the photo straight from your gallery.

More details

A passport photo online saves a trip to the pharmacy or the photo booth: take a picture at home against a plain wall, drop it here and get a photo cut to the exact size of your document. It works for passports, ID cards and visas, 22 documents in all from 17 countries plus the Schengen visa, among them the US passport and visa at 2x2 inches, the UK passport at 35x45 mm, and the Canadian, Australian and Indian passports.

The tool finds your face, sets the crop so the head has the right height in the frame and makes the background plain, white or light gray depending on the document. Then it checks the result: head size in millimeters against the official norm where we have one, an even background, a centered face, eyes at the right height and a straight head. If something is off, it tells you what to change, for example to move the camera back or stand in the middle. You can also move and resize the frame by hand.

You get the exact size in millimeters and pixels at 300 dpi, as a single photo for online applications or as a 10x15 cm sheet, the standard 4x6 print, with as many copies as fit. A sheet like that costs very little at a drugstore or supermarket photo counter.

All of this runs in your browser. The photo is not uploaded: the model that finds the face and removes the background downloads once and works on your device. It takes about 20 seconds on a computer without a graphics card.

For a good result, ask someone to take the picture at eye level, from about arm's length or a little further, in soft daylight with no shadows on the face or the wall. Look straight at the camera with a neutral expression, hair away from the eyes, and take glasses off unless your document allows them.

An honest warning. We follow published sizes, but rules change and offices add their own requirements on light, expression, glasses or head covering. We can't guarantee that a photo will be accepted, so check the current rules on your government's website, such as travel.state.gov or gov.uk, before you print or upload it.
